After the surroundings of the 300,000th group in the Stalingrad area at the end of 1942, the military operations of enormous force were played on the external front of the encirclement, in which large military groups of both parties equally participated. In their scale and significance, they surpassed even those that went directly in the Stalingrad area. Each battle in the Kotelnikovo area went far beyond the limits of a private case, and turned into a constituent part of the fateful battle, which became a bright page of the history of the Great Patriotic War.
The book was developed on the basis of a number of archival documents that are being introduced for the first time, as well as publications of domestic and foreign authors. It discusses such issues as the birth of the plan of operation, the creation of an external front, battles on the external front from December 3-12, 1942, defensive battles of the 51st Army (December 12-17), a counterattack operation of the 2nd Guards Army and its formations (December 24-31), Operation "Small Saturn". Based on the analysis of the fighting, issues related to the art of conducting operations on the external front of the environment are summarized. The applications give a chronicle of events in the Stalingrad area in December 1942, the most important operational documents related to this period, certificates on the composition of the troops, as well as brief certificates for the main actors.
