Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp was an outstanding Russian philologist, a professor at Leningrad University, the founder of the comparative-typological method in folklore studies, and one of the creators of the modern theory of the text. For many years, he studied folklore, researched the patterns of its development, established the origins of well-known genres, plots, characters, and motifs. Propp's works dedicated to folklore are considered classics of philological science, including "Morphology of the Folktale," "Historical Roots of the Magic Tale," "Russian Heroic Epic," and others.
