"Catastrophe, which has become everyday life" - with this tagged phrase, the famous literary critic Zara Mintz determined the essence of the first novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The White Guard was written almost "in hot pursuit" and reproduced the recent events of the Civil War in 1918-1919. The author achieved maximum documentary accuracy, he placed fictional characters in a real environment and forced the feelings and emotions that were known to both himself and his compatriots. The novel is largely autobiographical, some characters have prototypes from among the acquaintances and relatives of Bulgakov. As the writer Mikhail Osorgin noted, the heroes of the work - "not stencil puppets in prescribed costumes, but living people." They cause understanding and sympathy, they excite the readers with sincere emotions and make you think about the tragedy that have befallen the country in those years.
