Contemporaries called Korolenko the conscience of the era. His popularity was very great, almost all of reading Russia was listened to each of his words. Some attracted the author’s ability to compassion and love, others - his optimism and belief that a person is led by a desire for justice. The ideal image of the Russian writer and intellectual was seen in him by Leo Tolstoy and Ivan Bunin, Maxim Gorky and Anton Chekhov. Korolenko entered the history of Russian literature primarily as the author of numerous stories and stories that made up a kind of chronicle of Russian life at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries. The most famous of them (“Makar’s dream”, “Children of the dungeon”, “Blind musician”, “The river plays”, “Without a tongue”, etc) are presented in this collection
