The novel of the outstanding Russian writer Boris Stepanovich Zhitkov (1882-1938) is dedicated to the events of the 1905 revolution. In one of the Russian provinces, covered by strikes and street battles, Jewish pogroms and revolutionary terror, the fate of the intelligentsia, factory workers, police and revolutionaries are intertwined. The only novel by Boris Zhitkov became the largest of his works, he considered him the main work of his life, denoting the theme of the novel with the words: “I write, in fact, about the power of the prince of this world. That"s the whole topic. All. Do not write down the whole and a hundred volumes. If at least a little the Lord will help, at least show the corner. ” The publication of the first two books of the novel in 1929 and 1934 caused an ambiguous reaction of Soviet criticism due to an unusual image of revolutionary events. As a result, the full edition of the text of the novel, planned for 1941, was destroyed for censorship reasons. Miraculously preserved and published entirely in 1999, the novel became one of the main “missed” works of Russian literature of the 20th century
