Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov (N. Shchedrin) is known to today"s readers mainly as the author of several textbook fairy tales, but this is far from the best of what he wrote. The writer of a colossal scale endowed with a "crazy-humorous fantasy", Saltykov exposed the essence of the phenomena and showed his life from an unexpected side. It is no accident that for his contemporaries he became the "ruler of the thoughts", one of those to whom they believed, whose word excited the minds, whose bitter laughter caused response and sympathy. The texts published in this book - the epistolary fragments from the Musketeers" messages of the writer himself, the little -known memoirs of contemporaries about him, prose and poetic responses to his death - give an idea of Saltykov not only as a brilliant artist, socially significant personality, but also as a private person man.
