At the end of the XI century. Participants in the first crusade (1096-1099) founded the county of Edessa, the first Latin state in the east. The history of the Frankish Edessa is a wonderful example of the successful synthesis of Western European and oriental institutions, and a long period during which the county managed to survive under the constant attacks of Muslims up to the middle of the XII century, only proves the strength of the “Edessan model” of feudalism.
At the same time, despite the uniqueness of the County of Edessa, until recently, a relatively little attention was paid to him in the historiography of the Crusades. In this work, an attempt was made to at least partially fill this gap. In it, on the example of the County of Essa, the military affairs of the states founded by the crusaders are considered. The purpose of the study is to reconstruct the military organization of the County of Edessa at the end of the XI - first half of the XII centuries. The work considers such the main aspects as the structure and number of the Essa army, the use of allies and auxiliary troops from the local population, the army command, strategy and tactics, the general features and features of the “Edessan feudalism”, weapons, equipment and military symbolism of the Edessan army.
The book will be interesting to both professional historians and a wide circle of readers who are fond of the history of the Crusades and Latin Zamorye
