“Woe from the mind appeared before Onegin, Pechorin, survived them, went wrong through the Gogol period, lived these half a century since its appearance and everything lives with its imperishable life, will survive and will not lose its vitality.”

This was noted in 1871 by the writer I. A. Goncharov in the critical sketch Million of Tubes. The most famous work of Alexander Sergeyevich Griboedov (1795–1829) (many consider him the only creation of the author, but this is an erroneous opinion) was first published in 1825 with great censorship reductions and almost immediately dispersed to quotes. The latter contributed to the existence of manuscript lists - the full texts of the comedy, conveyed from hand to hands with enthusiastic readers, we can say that, among other things, “Woe from Wit” became the first work that was massively replicated in Samizdat. Without bills, comedy - one of the peaks of Russian drama and poetry, a magnificent satire on Moscow society at the beginning of the 19th century, one of the most cited texts in Russian culture - was printed only in 1862, and since then it was repeatedly reprinted, put on the stage and filmed. . Each of us in everyday life often uses winged phrases, often not remembering that they have the author - Griboedov: “Who are the judges?”, “Ba! All faces are familiar! ”,“ Fresh tradition, but it’s hard to believe ”,“ I would be glad to serve, they are sick ”,“ Happy watches are not observing ”,“ With feeling, with proper, with an arrangement ”, because this is all out of“ grief From the mind ...

The popularity of the comedy, the brightness and identity of its heroes led to the emergence of a large number of alterations and continuations of the original Griboedovo text, of which the most talented and famous one should recognize the play by Evdokia Petrovna Rostopchina (1811–1858) “Chatsky’s return to Moscow, or a meeting of acquaintances Persons after twenty -five years of separation ”, written in 1856. The famous poetess was not only able to show in the satirical light a modern Moscow society, but also to reproduce one of the main features of Griboedov’s comedy is its timelessness: the types that has been bred by the growth character and types are strikingly relevant today.

This book includes drawings of two talented artists at once. The works of Mikhail Sergeyevich Bashilov (1821–1870) decorated the very first full publication of the “grief from the mind” of 1862, and the illustrations of Dmitry Nikolayevich Kardovsky (1866–1943), created from 1907 to 1912, since the first publication became the classics of the design of the Immortal Griboedovo comedy
