The novel “Thief”, written by Leonid Leonov in 1925–1926 and supplemented in the late 1950s, stands apart against the background of Soviet literature of that time-his plot and characters are too atypical. At the same time, the characteristic, bright artistic manner of the very young writer at that time, his proximity to the traditions of Russian classical literature were highly appreciated by colleagues and was reflected in more than one glorified work of those years.
The main character of the novel Mitya Vekshin - in the past, a red commander, who had recently fought for the ideals of the revolution, was expelled from the army for violent temper and is now disappointed in previous beliefs, seeing how the “bright future” degenerated into the wretched reality of the NEP. Having joined the thieves" gang, he succeeded in a new craft. The former life was left behind, and in it the family and still bride Vekshina is beautiful Masha Dolomanova.
