The young man, a graduate of St. Petersburg University, receives a strange letter from his uncle, retired colonel, the owner of the village of Stepanchikova. And now the young man comes to his uncle’s estate and finds out that everything in the house, including the owners, is forced to perform the whims of the survivor Thomas Fomich Opuskin ... The image of the Russian Tartuf occupied Dostoevsky in those years when he was in the Siberian link. Having received in 1857 a complete amnesty and permission to publish, the writer took up this plot. He laid great hopes for the story, hoping to strengthen his position in literature.
