Galfrid of Monmuta - an English priest, historian and writer, whose works in the Middle Ages were widely known both in the author’s homeland and throughout Europe and, dispersing in many lists, transfers and imitations, had a significant impact on the Western literature and artistic culture of subsequent centuries . His main works - the prosaic chronicle of the Britons History (c. 1137) and the poem The Life of Merlin (between 1148 and 1150) - presented world literature and art for King Lire and his three daughters, an image The wizard Merlin, the soothsayer and mentor of King Arthur, and, of course, the first detailed story about the deeds of Arthur himself, the semi -legal leader of the Britons, the most popular hero of Welsh traditions and later poetic and prosaic novels about the knights of the round table. Chretien de Trois and Thomas Malori, Rafael Kholinrad and William Shakespeare, Roger Lanselin Green and Mary Stewart are owed a lot to Galfried"s works, in which the lack of reliability is generously compensated by the entertainment of the narrative, the variety of stylistic manner, the courage and originality of the author’s fantasy
