Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853-1921) is primarily known for his textbook stories "Blind musician" and "children of the dungeon". The book of his memoirs, which he himself considered the main thing in his creative biography, is familiar to the wide reader much worse. "The story of my contemporary" describes the childhood and youth of the writer - up to his return from a series of links in 1885, and is withstanding in the spirit of the best examples of Russian memoir prose: from the "past and thoughts" of Alexander Herzen to "notes of the revolutionary" Peter Kropotkin. However, from these classical texts, the “History ...” is distinguished by the remarkable absence of egocentrism: Korolenko writes not so much about himself against the background of time as about time as such. Thanks to the author’s installation on the marginal honesty and objectivity of Korolenko’s memory, they turn out to be a magical window during the reign of Alexander II, which allows you to see this era far from us in all its diversity, crowded and paradoxical similarities with modernity.
