Mikhail Bulgakov wrote his novel "Master and Margarita" for a total of 12 years. Eight editions of the novel remaining after the death of the writer are known. The first edition of the novel, brought to the 15th chapter, in March 1930, the author destroyed after receiving the news of the ban on the play "Basis of the Svyatosh".
Next year, Mikhail Bulgakov resumed work on the novel. In the second edition of the novel, Margarita and Master already appeared, and Woland had a retinue, and the subtitle "fantastic novel".
The third edition of the novel, begun in the second half of 1936 or in 1937, was initially called "Prince of Darkness". In 1937, returning once again to the beginning of the novel, the author first wrote on the title sheet the name "Master and Margarita", which became final, set the dates of 1928-1937 and no longer left him work almost until death
