The monograph examines the history of Tana (Azov)-an important political, administrative, shopping and cultural center, which played a key role in the system of international relations of the Northern Black Sea region in the Middle Ages in the XIII-XV centuries. Located at the mouth of the Don, on the territory of the Golden Horde, Tana was the farthest factor in the two Italian naval republics - Genoa and Venice, through it there were connections of the Mediterranean world with ancient Russia, Byzantium, Central Asia and China. A variety of and unique materials of archival sources, manuscripts from the meetings of Venice, Genoa, many European libraries, publications and archaeological materials studied and analyzed in the book fill out an important gap in our knowledge about this era. The book considers the political and economic history of Tana in the XIII-XIV centuries, its legal status, all aspects of its various trade relations, the composition of the population, life and living conditions, interethnic and interfaith relations, evaluate its role in history as one of the main crossroads of trade ways of the Middle Ages. The book is the first part of the dilogy on the history of Tana, from the beginning of its occurrence to the defeat by the Timur troops in 1395. The second volume is planned to devote the history of Tana in the XV century
