At twenty -six years old, when the memories of the harsh years of the Civil War were still bright in memory, and the life of an emigrant in France was unsettled, Gaito Gazdanov wrote the novel “Evening at Claire”, returning to life the departed world of his youth.
It was sixteen Nikolai when he sided with the whites in the civil war and, as a result, was forced to escape from the country. After wandering, he finds himself in Paris, where he meets the charming Frenchwoman Claire, which he fell in love with pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg in 1917. Every evening, Kolya visits Claire, hoping for response feelings, and every conversation becomes a reason for the memories of childhood, father and mother, friends, lost to the Motherland and the Civil War. The novel is largely autobiographical.
Russian emigrant, working at night by a taxi driver, travels along the night boulevards and the most dull streets of Paris of the 30s, where a centuries-old, non-proceeding poverty is creeping. At the same time, a witness, a participant and narrator, he draws a complex and contradictory image of the inside of the city, inhabited by the fallen nobles, alcoholic philosophers, crazy and courtesans
