Oleg Mikhailovich Kuvaev (1934-1975), a geologist and writer, who left a bright mark in Russian literature in a short life. His novel "Territory" (1974) withstood more than two dozen publications and was translated into many languages of the world.
What is the territory? Chukotka, the eastern end of Siberia? Geographically - yes. And artistic - much wider. Kuvaev’s territory is a planet that has no boundaries on the map inhabited by people devoted to their work, knowing the rudeness and beauty of the real world and living, as it should be for those who have gained their life destiny. The territory is a harsh world, merciless to weak and cowardly and generous to volitional and purposeful. The young guy Sergei Baklakov finds himself on the very “edge of the world”, in the village, from where they go into the endless tundra search parties that go to look for gold. But gold is only a pretext for work, and the heroes of Kuvaev are looking for a completely different one - the meaning of life. "Territory" is a romantic saga about the sense found. Kuvaev wrote it in the traditions of the sixties prose: sharply drawing the characters, dandies to write out landscapes, playing quotes, minting aphorisms, constantly changing intonation - combining sentimentality and pathetics with irony
