In this collection of works of the world -famous Russian classic F. M. Dostoevsky, one of his early stories is included - the “bad joke”, which already shows the characteristic techniques and features of the writer"s style, as well as the famous story “White Nights”, in which the prototype of the main character is Dostoevsky himself. The book is decorated with illustrations by two artists of the first half of the 20th century - Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky and Yuri Pavlovich Annenkov. The story “Failure joke” F. M. Dostoevsky wrote before his most famous major novels. For the first time, this satirical and largely grotesque work was published in 1862. The characteristic techniques and features of the style of Dostoevsky, the beginnings of all its subsequent images and ideas, including the theme of “little people”, are so characteristic, are already visible in it. In a “bad joke”, the writer emphasizes how the actions of “business people” and the ideals they proclaim diverge from the principles of humanism. One of these “little people”, a lonely and timid dreamer, is the protagonist of Dostoevsky’s famous story “White Nights”. He cannot fit into the real world and therefore goes into the sphere of dreams and unrealistic fantasies. In this story, Dostoevsky demonstrates his writer"s talent, subtly and skillfully anatomizing the poor human heart. The writer for a long time polished the final text of this story, the atmosphere of which makes both the “Copper Horseman” and the “house in Kolomna” Pushkin. White Nights have repeatedly filmed both in Russia and abroad. This story has become one of Dostoevsky"s iconic works
