“Taras Bulba” and “Wiy” from the Mirgorod cycle are one of the most famous works by N.V. Gogol. Communication with the people, the merger with their interests, devotion to the Motherland determines the breadth of bright colorful characters created by the writer in the heroic-patriotic story “Taras Bulba”. The form of Taras embodies the features of the national hero, the defender and spokesman of folk interests: powerful vitality, indefatigable energy, clear awareness of the goal and at the same time sincerity, hot love for comrades. In the story “Wiy”, imbued with a feeling of an ominous religious-mystical horror, the author continues the topic of the confrontation of good and evil, light and darkness. The most terrible sin, the writer believes, is the unbelief and unwillingness to live according to God"s commandments
