A thin metaphysical detective, one of the most mysterious works of Vladimir Nabokov. In addition to the novel “Swing”, the book includes the stories “Resentment”, “Swan”, “Terra Incognita”, “Meeting”, “Gup”, “Employed Man”, “Music”, “Pilgram”, “Perfection”, “Case from Life ”,“ Beauty ”and“ Alert ”. The main character, unable to withstand humiliation, commits suicide and becomes a ghost that can only observe what is happening around. First of all, his attention is attracted by the mysterious figure of Smurov, whose true personality readers recognize almost at the very end of the story. This work filled with metaphors and references to Russian literature was written in Berlin and first published in the journal Modern Notes in 1930. The book publication, however, took place only in 1938. Nabokov planned to include twenty -one stories in this publication, thematically and stylistically related to the story. However, the publisher assured the writer that it would be impossible to recoup the format of such a book (350 pages) As a result, thirteen stories were left, present in this book exactly in the order in which the author placed them
