In May 1967, encouraged by mass supplies of Soviet weapons, Egyptian President Nasser decided that the time had come to act. He demanded that the UN forces posted from the Sinai Peninsula, and then blocked the Tiran Strait, closing the sea path to Israel south and east. This was actually a declaration of war.
