Even on the way to the United States, Ilf and Petrov decided to take a long car trip around the country in order to get deeper and more circumstances to get acquainted with the life of America. However, at first the trip was not established. At that moment, when the travelers began to seem that the trip would not take place, they met their future tireless companions along the roads of America, Mr. Adams and his wife. The real name of Adams is S. A. Thron. By profession, the throne was an engineer and served in the company General Electric. He worked for seven years in the USSR. When Ilf and Petrov arrived in New York, the throne came to them with a proposal for help.
In his American diary, Ilf Day after day noted where they were, what they saw, what they did, who they talked to. Only details, only facts and numbers that struck the imagination of the authors, records of conversations with road fellow travelers, pieces of landscape. Subsequently, all the accumulated material resulted in a solid book, about which later the critic of the newspaper New York Herald Tribun, he writes: “Not many of our foreign guests retired to such a distance from the Broadway and the central streets of Chicago, not many could tell about their impressions with such lively and humor.
