The book included two novels by Nikolai Leskov (1831-1895), who saw the light almost simultaneously, in 1873. Naturally, much in common turned out to be in the movement of the thought of the "most Russian of our writers" (L. N. Tolstoy) Leskov moves further from the traditional European novel, and this movement is back to the epic, to the Russian tale, to free form with ambiguous heroes and open finals. Who is this "fascinated wanderer"? Murderer? Undoubtedly. The righteous? Oh sure. Sins and repentance are fused in his soul - and, probably, this is the main thing that the writer appreciated in the Russian character. The heroes of both stories are the prototypes of those not at all simple, but deeply moral people whom Leskov tried to see in society and whom he called good people. “Terrible and unnecessary ... to see one "rubbish" in the Russian soul, which has become the main object of new literature, and ... I went to look for the righteous ...
