At the beginning of the 20th century, Mikhail Artsybashev was perhaps the most famous writer in Russia, and he owed his literary glory to the novel Sanin. The book was published in 1907 and was a deafening success among readers. The status of the “ruler of the thoughts” and a fighter with dead norms of morality was fixed behind Artsybashev. The image of the protagonist who called for rejoice for life, satisfying his “natural desires”, turned out to be surprisingly consonant with time. Throughout Russia, the circles of “Saninians” and the League of Free Love were created, while in criticism around the novel fierce disputes were fought between his supporters and opponents. In the Soviet years, the works of Artsybashev were not published, and his name was undeservedly forgotten. Meanwhile, the work of Artsybashev, of course, is one of the brightest pages in the literature of the Silver Age and will be interesting to everyone who is fond of the history of Russian culture
