The name of Alexander Nikolayevich Afanasyev is on a par with the names of outstanding Russian scientists of the 19th century. He is known as a cultural historian and a researcher of Russian literature, ethnographer and folklorist.
The idea of creating a collection of folk Russian fairy tales arose in him back in 1851. From 1855 to 1863, eight of fairy tales were published, almost 600 texts. This is the largest collection of folk tales, known to world science. More than a third of fairy -tale materials were provided by Afanasyev from the archive of the Russian Geographical Society. He received about 200 fairy tales from V.I. Dalya. Afanasyev also used the materials of other folklore collectors and a few of his own records made in the Voronezh province. He accompanied the publications of fairy tales with preface and circumstances in which he led comparative materials to the published texts.
This publication contains the most famous and popular tales from the meeting of the great researcher of Russian folklore. "
