The book of the Finnish historian T. Keskisarya is dedicated to one of the most dramatic events of the Soviet-Finnish war (Winter War) of 1939–1940. - battles in the area of the village of Suomossalmi and roads on Raata. There are two well-armed Soviet divisions (44th and 163rd), fulfilling the command of the command to cut the territory of Finland from the Karelian border in the east to the bay in the West, were stopped and defeated by smaller ones, but better adapted to military operations in the snow-covered taiga Finnish units. The author emphasizes that his main goal was not a description of hostilities, but the study of the destinies, moods and spiritual state of people - military and civilian, who were involved in this drama, both from the Finnish and the Soviet side. He describes in detail a difficult life in this deaf corner of Finland, talks about the events preceding the Winter War, including the period of the Civil War in Finland and Russia. The book shows a complex picture of political moods in the Finnish outback in the pre -war years. The author is far from the triumph about the victory of the Finns in these battles, he concludes that both sides lost in the Winter War, and this was the main lesson for two neighboring peoples, which they were still able to extract for themselves
