In August 1071, the Byzantine Emperor Roman IV Diogenes turned on a campaign with a large army in an attempt to repel the invasions of the Seljuk Turks, aimed at the very heart of the empire - Anatoly.
Charged by surprise the Turkish Sultan Alp-Arslan, the novel was forced to enter the battle with only a half troops participating in the Mancichertic campaign. By the end of this fatal day, most soldiers of the Byzantine army died, the rest took to flight, and the emperor himself was captured. As a result, the empire lost its indigenous lands in Anatolia and was critically weakened, while the Turks quickly expanded their power, which ultimately led to the appeal of Byzantium for help to Western Europe, thus causing the first crusade. In the book of readers, these events are considered in the context of a long conflict between the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world (Arabs and Seljuk Turks), which preceded the fatal battle of Man-Cickert, with a special accent for causes, the course and result of this decisive battle.
The author conducted an analysis of the composition, weapons and tactics of the opposing armies that are very different from each other. The last chapter is devoted to assessing the effects of the battle under Mancickert on the strategic position of the Byzantine Empire in Anatolia and its role as Casus Belli for the Crusades. The text complements several dozen cards and battles, turning the book into an invaluable study of a critically important period of military history
