The book opens with an impressive family portrait of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Each reader, who opened the novel by Leo Tolstoy, knows from the very first page that "all families are unhappy in their own way", the nomenclature families of Soviet Moscow are especially unhappy. The elder brother of the heroine of the story, at that time, a fifteen -year -old girl, ends with suicide. The grief of the family, which has not managed to become common, moves Anna from her parents. She has many strange, but interesting teenage friends, in communication with them Anna learns the world, their shadows on the pages of this book. Like most of her peers, Anna is closely in the tough framework of society. Life gives her a chance - she leaves for America to once again test her fate.
years later, Anna comes with her husband to celebrate the "anniversary" of her marriage to the island of Barbados at the hotel, where Rudolfo Valentino lived and died. The belief is connected with his name that the fans coming to him to worship are dying of a mysterious virus. Anna gets from an unknown virus, in a dream she is the famous writer William Burrose, who declares to her that she had to wait with death, and she will need to return to Moscow soon
