"The Great Master of Word and Image" - so spoke about Ivan Shmelev in the literary environment. Sincerely loving his homeland and his people, he continued to write about the most secret, native and expensive heart - about old Russia in exile. In the novel “The Pog of God "(1930-1931), the eyes of a six-year-old child, the author nostalgically admires Moscow and Zamoskvorechy, peasant and city people, are happy to listen to the stories of pilgrims found in the path of the main characters.
Modern Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, Shmelev depicted in the novel a man from a restaurant (1911) through the story of a small man - the old waiter Skorokhodov. In the story "Inexhaustible Chalice" (1918), written in a difficult time for the country, the author defiantly turns to the past. The main character of the story is a talented serf artist Ilya, who wrote an icon who became miraculous.
The story is complemented by the illustrations of Vladimir Panov
