For the novel about Peter the Great, A. N. Tolstoy was looking for an approach for a long time. How to convey the color of the era? What language should the characters speak? Paingrant work, interest in everyday life, folklore, reading evidence of contemporaries and studying the fine art of Peter"s time - all this helped the writer find his own language and create a work of art supported by historical material. A thorough stylization of the speech of heroes is built on an artistic understanding of genuine historical documents. Fictional characters coexist along with historical faces, but every fictional character is a collective image of the Russian man of the Petrine era. The grandiose work on the novel lasted 14 years and broke off with the death of the writer.
