Vasily Aksenov is a world -famous writer, laureate of a Russian bouker and gentleman of the French Order of Arts and Literature. The story "Paper Landscape" (1982) was written in the first years of emigration and first published in the USA. The protagonist Igor Bicycles enters America from Soviet reality, which is depicted with bitter irony.
Yesterday"s Soviet engineer, convinced that the "Bad world of the bureaucracy" is to blame for everything, is surprised to find in America the same paperwork and bureaucracy - all that he was so eager to leave. Will this become a collapse of illusions? Is there any hope for a new life and love?
