The story “Overcoat” is one of Gogol’s best creations, from which, if not all Russian literature, then a lot in it, ”many artists illustrated. Savve Brodsky, who worked on the “overcoat” in 1978-1981, was especially the visual metaphor. The earth, covered in a gray overcoat cloth, a cold Petersburg sky, sagging by the floors of the same overcoat, the figure of a small lonely man rushing in a huge hostile city ... Refined from specific Gogol images, rethinking them, the artist showed the historical time that generated their historical time. Brodsky’s overcoat is not a “bright guest ... who revived the poor life for a moment” a small official, but a symbol of the entire Nikolaev time. Unfortunately, the Overcoat was the last work of the artist. The book saw the light already without it
