Book of a military journalist N.S. Astashkina is devoted to the problem of Chechnya in post -Soviet Russia. Based on extensive material - various documents, newspaper publications, analytical notes - the author builds a chronicle of the origin and development of a tragic conflict in the North Caucasus. The author was born on October 12, 1953 in the city of Orenburg region in the family of a worker. After graduating from the evening school of working youth in 1972, he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army. Having served in the city of Lviv, he began to be published in the district newspaper, and in 1974 he entered the Faculty of Journalism of the Higher Military-Political School. In 1978, as a military correspondent, he served in the army, and then in the district newspaper in the Far East. In 1992 he graduated from the Military-Political Academy named after V.I. Lenin. Since 1989, he has been a permanent correspondent for the central newspaper of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation “Red Star” in the North Caucasus region. As a military reporter, he went through the first and second Chechen wars of the late twentieth century. He was awarded the Order of Military Merit, the medal of the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, II degree. Married, has a daughter
