In the 70s of the 19th century, a whole galaxy of writers appeared in Russia specializing in the description of the distant, little-known corners of our vast Fatherland. So, D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak, V. G. Korolenko and G. A. Machet opened the distant Urals and Siberia to readers, V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko and K. K. Sluchevsky wrote about the Russian North. Central Asia also found a number of its householders, among which the first place undoubtedly belonged to Nikolai Nikolaevich Karazin. His pen and brush brought down "Russian society with an unknown, wild, rich in the country."
Karazin first acted as an artist and writer almost simultaneously. “I love to exactly the same extent both of which (that is, literature and painting),” he wrote later, “neither the slightest difference, nor the slightest preference.” His first drawings appeared at the end of 1871 in the magazines" Niva "and “World Illustration”, and in the magazine “The case" for 1872, the first twelve chapters of the novel“ on the distant outskirts ”, which included in the publication offered ...
Central Asia was the main theme of Karazin"s work. He first began to introduce the Russian public with the life and character of this distant Terra Incognita. According to his drawings, paintings and stories, more than one generation studied the mysterious East. He always knew how to preserve beauty in his paintings and literary works, to invest in them "particle of what is not given by any teaching - life and interest. Karazin quickly managed to gain fame and an extensive circle of admirers. I. Repin called him among the "singing" of the Russian artistic intelligentsia. About his work, where everything was “captured by taste, talent, bright color, love for the homeland,” wrote the young I. Grabar. "Russian Gustav Dorea" called his contemporaries-critics. In watercolor painting, Nikolai Nikolaevich created his own special style, which will later be called "Karazinsky": strong light effects, bright contrasts, a special, somewhat gloomy flavor, a magnificent composition and endless fantasy.
In the very first years of his literary activity, he was able to stand out from the faceless mass of fiction-craftsmen and discover his own personality to such an extent that his works were easily recognized by the reader. Karazin began by abandoning the generally accepted rules and beloved by those modern fiction. He began to write about life - unknown and exotic for Petersburgers, about what he saw in his long wanderings on hot sand of Turkestan, about the boundless reeds of thickets in the Amu Darya delta, the morals and life of local residents. A whole gallery of portraits appears before us from the pages of Roman Karazin: we learn about the enthusiasts of easy profit, swindlers, corrupt officials, representatives of the administration and many others who have come to "master". All these types are written off from nature, so they remain interesting to the modern reader, giving a vivid idea of life "on the distant outskirts"
