Roman Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov (1812–1891) “Oblomov” (1859) is one of the most important works of Russian literature of the 19th century. It affects the acute social problems of that time: the difficult life of serfs, laziness and idleness of landowners. The image of the protagonist - Ilya Ilyich Oblomov - so truthfully and accurately reflected the common type of Russian nobility of the XIX century that the concept of Oblomovshchina was immediately entered into use. The critic Nikolai Dobrolyubov even claimed that “Oblomovshchina” is “the key to the unraveling of many phenomena of Russian life.”
