In this publication, the early works of I.S. Turgenev, which reveals the most important motives of his work - fate, duty, loneliness, search for happiness, etc. The approach to the disclosure of the inner world of characters, which later received the name of secret psychologism, was also manifested in them. “The poet must be a psychologist,” said Turgenev, “but secret: he must know and feel the roots of phenomena, but represents only the very phenomena - in their bosses or wilting.” The feeling of loneliness, despair distinguishes Turgenev’s “extra people” - heroes who are unable to find application to their forces, knowledge and talent. But the feeling of hopelessness is characteristic not only of individualists and rebels, but also to a small person. So, in the story “Mumu”, written by Turgenev on the basis of real events, Gerasim’s personal drama rises to the level of universal tragedy. It is no accident that I.S. Aksakov considered Gerasim"s image the personification of the Russian people, his terrible power and incomprehensible meekness
