The book of the Oxford professor, one of the most authoritative researchers of Nazism, talks about the Second World War from the point of view of Germany. It was based on private letters and diaries of the war. In chronological order, from 1939 to 1945, it was stated how the Germans perceived the beginning of the war, what were their hopes and fears and how their thoughts and feelings in the moments of victories and defeats changed, as well as after the defeat of Nazism. The author dwells in detail on how citizens of the warring country perceived repressions and cruelty in the conquered territories and in Germany itself, how they belonged to the conquered peoples, Jews and the “final solution of the Jewish issue”, as well as on complex relationships between the state and the church. Many space is given to the topic of massive Nazi propaganda. Of great interest are the details of the daily life of Germany at the front and in the rear: lack of food and production, card system, bombing, evacuation, relations with foreign workers, problems of children and adolescents. Taking a completely obvious anti -Nazi position, Nicholas Stargardt deliberately avoids assessments, trying to give an impartial description confirmed by the documents
