The Scientific and Publishing Center "Ladomir" continues to publish the main works of the outstanding French romance Theophilus Gauthier (1811-1872) Earlier, in 2012, in the series "Literary Monuments", the two -volume Romanic prose with the ten best stories of the writer saw the light of the two -volume.
The basis of this publication was three of its collections. The main one is the Mladoprani, in essence, the book of the artist about the "artists", a parody of square. The world of Gauthier is the world of the artist, seen by his eyes and the captured, vivid pictures of Parisian life, picked up from the stream of time and carefully transferred to the canvas, often this is a verbal story, likened to graphic image, the genus of Ecfrasis. In the words of Gauthier himself, truly this is a picture that lacks only the frame | Yes, a nail to hang her. " At the same time, this canvas is strikingly alive: as if in a magic lantern, a bizarre parade of characters - Egyptian mummies and vampires, artists -a -tales and national guards, drawers and a bourgeois, passes in front of the reader. All the characters of Gauthier are in their own way "artists": not only a shepherdess who becomes a famous Parisian painter, not only a non-union artist, but also a rural cure, and an eccentric inventor-artist, and a national guardsman, virtually evading service. Dreams and phantasmagoria, drugs and marvelous dreams are intertwined in a bright ball, antiquity and modernity go hand in hand and seem to go off the paintings (including literally, as in the novel of the “omphala”) Many of these works are published in Russian for the first time, the translations of the rest are verified according to the originals.
Particular interest is the section "Tales" composed of works addressed to the young audience. Written for children"s magazines and Kipseks, they appeared at a time when the children"s literature of France was experiencing an rise, and can rightfully be called its bright examples. As in the case of a short story, a picturesque diversity awaits the reader: there is a Chinese legend, and the Scandinavian ballad in prose, and an Arabian fairy tale, and magical stories in the manner of Madame d’Oonoa ...
The Early works of Theophilus Gauthier, still imitative, but interesting as "pen tests", in which the plots of future novels of a mature author are planned. Here is a selection of Leon Gozlan"s feuilletons about young francs, allowing to closely see these bohemian eccentrics - contemporaries and characters of Gauthier
