During his long life, Emar Olivier Le Arivel de Gonneville (1783-1872) turned out to be a witness to truly great historical events, which had a decisive influence on the fate of not only France, but all of Europe: from the Great French Revolution to the Franco-Prussian War. The representative of the ancient noble family, he was a convinced monarchist-LEGITIMIST, but he shed his blood and alien to the empire of Napoleon. Fortunately, this versatile gifted person possessed an undoubted literary gift, thanks to which the events of his rich military life, even two hundred years later, did not lose their brightness and lively attractiveness. It seems to readers a rare opportunity to first read in Russian the testimonies and thoughts of another French officer about that distant, but still infinitely attractive for any era’s military history
