The poetry of Alexei Nikolayevich Pleshcheev (1825-1893), a Russian writer, a translator and literary critic, has been known to all of us since school years. And lovers of the Russian romance can probably quote many of its poetic lines, because more than a hundred romances are written on Pleshcheyev’s poems. But Pleshcheyev’s prose is almost unfamiliar to the modern reader. But you only have to start reading it short, ironic, funny stories, and it immediately becomes clear how natural the appearance of Chekhov and Averchenko was later in the history of literature. Many stories included in this collection are first published without yards
