The action of the story to live until dawn unfolds in the winter of 1941, in the most difficult period of the defense of Moscow. The young lieutenant is trusted to lead the sabotage detachment and destroy the German warehouse. Fulfilling the task, almost all fighters die. The seriously wounded lieutenant is left alone and decides: his last victim will be the “last contribution to the homeland in the name of Soviet duty”
The collection also includes the story "Alpine Ballad". In the middle of the Great Patriotic War, several prisoners of war managed to escape from a concentration camp in the Alps after a night bombing. Only one of them - the young Soviet soldier - manages to find a shelter in the mountains, where he meets the Italian girl, like himself, who escaped from captivity
