The monograph is devoted to the study of the deep and versatile impact of the First World War on the life of Russian Karelia in 1914-1918. and the problems of socio-economic development of the region at a new round of modernization of Russian society at the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the published documentary sources and archival materials, many of which were first introduced into the research turnover, the influence of the military factor on the life of the population of Karelia was analyzed, the increased geostrategic significance of the Olonets province and Kemsky district of the Arkhangelsk province is shown. The regional features of the economic development of Karelia in the conditions of all-Russian modernization breakthrough 1914-1917 were identified. For the first time, the process of mobilization of human and material resources for the needs of the front was highlighted and the combat path of the most outstanding heroes - the inhabitants of the region was marked. A fairly complete picture of the political and socio-economic life of the Russian Karelia was recreated at the final stage of the First World War, when in 1918, after Russia"s departure and acquisition by Finland, this territory from the rear and relatively stable district turned into a border and front-line outskirts, Having later become one of the first centers of military intervention and civil war in the north of Russia.
