The small story of Nikolai Bogdanov contained a huge tragedy of the blockade of Leningrad and at the same time the incredible power of the human spirit. Through the eyes of a boy experiencing the first months of the war in the ice city, the reader sees not only the horrors of war, but also hope, firm faith in the victory and cohesion of the townspeople who support each other. The illustrations of the famous artist Vladimir Galdyaev, following the text, change the tone from the dark and hopeless at the beginning of the story to the bright spring in his finale
