"Identity" is a complex and multifaceted novel: it is at the same time a family epic and a narrative of the two thousandth wanderings of the Jewish people (Galuta), about its history and traditions, about the life of Jews in Russia, about state anti -Semitism in the USSR, about assimilation and the revival of national identity after Six -day war. At the same time, this is a novel about Soviet and Russian life, about the bifurcation of the consciousness of Galutic Jews, about the fight against the totalitarian system for the right to leave, about the democratic movement in Russia, about dissidents and "prisoners of Zion", about the heroic struggle for their state. Finally, this is a novel about a millennium of Russian-Jewish interaction, about ancient Khazaria and Ancient Russia, about why the self-consciousness of the "small people" differs from self-awareness" of "large people"
