“For what reasons did the Nazis decide to destroy the whole nation? Why did they send millions of men, women and children to concentration camps, pushed them into gas chambers, hung, shot, hunger, scored to death - destroyed in all imaginary and unimaginable ways? What place does this genocide take among all the horrors created by the Nazis? I thought about these issues for 25 years, creating television documentary programs about Nazism and World War II. In the course of this work, I visited many countries, met hundreds of eyewitnesses of those events - with those who suffered at the hands of the Nazis, with those who watched this from the outside, and with those who committed these crimes. Among the materials collected for my films, only a small part was known earlier. The Holocaust is the most monstrous crime in the history of mankind. We need to understand how such savagery became possible. And this book, created not only on the basis of new materials, but also based on recent research and documents of that time, is my attempt to do it. ” (Lawrence Fig)
