One of the most famous literary works of Leo Tolstoy, dedicated to the real historical personality-the valiant Hadji Murat, who was an assistant leader of the Caucasian highlanders, Imam Shamil, who sought to prevent the conquest of the North Caucasus by the Russian Empire. In 1851, Haji Murat crossed the side of the Russians, and the next year he died while trying to flee the mountains, and through this story Tolstoy shows the relationship of Russians with the highlanders as a whole, a clash of two completely different worlds. Tolstoy himself served in the Caucasus at the time when the story of Haji Murat happened, which gives the work a special historical reliability.
