The central part of the collection “Farewell, a brave person ...” is the story “Golden Crings”. For the first time published in 1962, it was very warmly met by readers who liked the sharp plot, good literary language, vivid images. The Golden Crowns was a real success. The entire circulation was instantly sold out. The author received hundreds of admiring letters from readers, numerous meetings with them, performances on television were waiting for him.
The story is devoted to the eternal topics of the struggle of good and evil, readiness for feat, the manifestation of the best human qualities. After all, all the best, like all the worst in people, is manifested especially brightly in wartime conditions. The action takes place during the war on the territory of the USSR occupied by the Germans in an invented author, but so typical of the south of the country of the city of Ensu and its district.
In this collection, the illustrations of the first edition of the novel Golden Crings, as well as the cycle of essays Song of the spindle, are preserved.
Soviet intelligence officers and partisans should get secret military information that may affect the success of a large front -line operation. Each of the underground knows that he risks life daily. The main character of the story - the intelligence of Galina - skillfully plays the role of a woman who is ready to work for the invaders. Courage, reaching insolence, composure, beauty, excellent knowledge of the German language and the manner of a social woman allow Galina to fight with a powerful abver (enemy intelligence and counterintelligence service) But how difficult it is to constantly pretend, and how it hurts to endure the contempt of people whose happiness you serve.
The name Golden crowns is associated with one of the key episodes of the book. To get in touch with the underground, Galina should have visited the dentist in Ensu and order gold crowns. The last scene of the story finally clarifies the reader the meaning of its name, as well as the heading of this collection. Efim Grinin, apparently, hesitated how to call his book. It is no coincidence that he once said that if it is possible to reprint it, he would call her goodbye, a brave person. We decided to keep the title at the story, under which it became famous, and the whole collection to name as the author would like.
The present edition also included fragments of the play “Love and Hate” set according to the plot of the “golden crowns”, complementing and enriching some of its lines. So, in the story there is only one phrase of Galina, that she traveled all over Ukraine and was everywhere among the Germans. But in one of the scenes of the play, the German officer reads the dossier of Galina, revealing the nature of her activity: “In September 1941, she visited Izmail as an actress, a week later a sabotage was committed there ... July-August 1942, she lived in Yekaterinoslavl, a translator in The city council ... On August 16, documents from the army headquarters were stolen there ... ”The image of Galina was not invented. As the author of the book said, he knew two such reconnaissance women. Anyway, how can a writer create a work without relying on his own impressions? The reader will easily find what facts of his military biography used Efim Grinin in the “golden crowns”, in particular to describe the beginning of the military path of Semyon, the husband of Galina, if he reads his essay “Pages of memoirs of the former sergeant of the 251st mountain rifle regiment”. Fortunately, E. I. Grinin himself did not have a chance to go through the torments through which his hero went, although the writer completely drank the soldier"s dashing.
