M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin is a famous writer of the 19th century, a master who had the rare gift to combine drama and satire, comic and tragic in the description of the state structure and everyday life. “Gentlemen Golovlev” - a novel published in 1880, initially thought as separate stories and essays. However, later the characters surrounded more vivid, and sometimes autobiographical details and experiences. And on the advice of I. S. Turgenev, these stories that acquired integrity were redesigned and united in a single book. M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin did not like the provincial "swamp", creating a picture of the devastation and degeneration of the landlord-esteem and family. However, the images of his heroes are so accurately and deeply described that many of their names and surnames have become household and still amaze readers with the accuracy of characteristics.
Roman "Lord Golovlevi" remains one of the highest achievements of critical realism in Russian literature of the XIX century. The remarkable illustrations of Konstantin Buslaev, made in a bright satirical manner, very accurately complement the inimitable style of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin
