The attention of readers is offered a book by the great Russian writer and playwright A.P. Chekhov (1860-1904), containing a cycle of short notes and feuilletons written for the magazine "Shards" in 1883-1885. In this cycle, containing a humorous chronicle of city news, many disadvantages of Moscow’s public life were reflected. In the book, you can find responses to the theater and literary life of Russia, criticism of judicial and railway orders, primitive entertainment of Moscow inhabitants and visiting merchants, exposure of crooking frauds of insurance societies, etc. Much attention was paid to the newspaper-journal of Moscow, the author makes the evil ridicules newspaper, mocks the dealers and adventurers acting as editors. Some sketches of A.P. Chekhov later served as material for his best works.
Despite the fact that the book was written a very long time, many thoughts and observations of the author are striking in the present time. Therefore, the book will be interesting not only to literary scholars and historians, but also by the widest circle of readers
