The Fiery Angel is the first novel, the poet, prose writer, playwright and one of the founders of Russian symbolism Valery Yakovlevich Bryusov (1873–1924) The basis of this work, first published in 1907 in the magazine Libra, fell on the fantastically transformed story of the author’s mutual executions with writers Nina Ivanovna Petrovskaya and Andrei Bely (Boris Nikolayevich Bugaev) The book is illustrated by 63 engravings of the masters of the northern revival. At the twenty-year-olds, Valery Bryusov was carried away by the French poets-symbolists. In 1893, he wrote an enthusiastic letter to Verlen, in which he said that he dreamed of spreading symbolism in Russia. Bryusov’s dream came true. In 1895, he released a collection of his own poems under the pretentious name “masterpieces”, wrote in his diary that his youth is the youth of the genius, and by the end of the 19th? He gained the glory of one of the leaders of decadents and symbolists. Friends and acquaintances of Bryusov knew that the poet was fond of occultism, spiritualism, magic, and sometimes jokingly called him a sorcerer. The poet himself spread rumors that he knew a lot about love of love conspiracies. In the circle of the Symbolists, who, according to Khodasevich, tried to “find a alloy of life and creativity”, Nina Ivanovna Petrovskaya, the failed assistant of the dentist, quickly made the mistress of the fashion literary salon at that time. In 1904, she came to Bryusov and completely seriously asked that he bewitch the poet Andrei Bely, who recently interrupted Petrovskaya. Of course, nothing came of this venture. However, the married Bryusov suddenly became interested in Nina Ivanovna. She became for the poet not only a mistress, but also Renata - the main character of the novel “Fiery Angel”, which Bryusov settled to write. The action of the novel was unfolded in Germany of the 16th century. Bryusov depicted himself in this work by Landsknecht Ruprecht, and the poet Bely presented in the image of Count Heinrich von Potterheim. The transplantation that Bryusov received at the historical faculty of Moscow University allowed him to make a real masterpiece from the Fiery Angel. For the first time, the novel was printed in parts in the magazine Libra. Bryusov made a funny literary hoax from this publication. In the preface, he wrote that he is only a translator and commentator of the true German manuscript of the 16th century. Under the name of Bryusov himself, Roman was published in 1908 at the Skorpion publishing house. The book was illustrated by dozens of engravings of the XV - XVI centuries. All of them are included in this publication, but reproduced in much better quality and with the corrected attributes
