“We all left the Gogol’s“ overcoat, ”Russian writers say rightly ...”-said French critic E.-M. de Vogue in 1885. Today, few people will not agree with this statement today. How did the story of the stolen overcoat provide Gogol with such an honorable place in the literature? To this question, every generation of readers is looking for its answer, discovering for itself a mysterious, strange, fantastic Gogol world. Three cycles of his stories are published in the present edition: “Evenings on the Farm near Dikanka” (1831–1832) - Gogol"s first collection, which brought him fame and enthusiastically met by A. S. Pushkin, “Mirgorod” (1835), which became an organic continuation “ Evenings ”, as well as“ St. Petersburg Tales ”, which, although they were not united by the author into the cycle, but in 1842 were printed together in his collected works and went down in the history of literature as a whole.
